Every person is blessed with unique gifts. For me, they are the gifts of creativity and the gift of connection. I have this unique ability to see the end result before I even start a painting or project, and I am blessed to have "never met a stranger" as they say. There are 3 important steps I have learned on my own journey to success and I want to share them with you today.
The first step is to acknowledge the gifts you have been given. When you know, you can use those gifts to make an impact on the world and use them to make a difference.
So I ask you, what is your gift?
Maybe you can write, sing, dance, organize, public speaking....I mean I could go on and on. If you don't know, ask a friend or family member what they think your gifts are. Or ask God through prayer to show them to you.
Maybe you know your gifts but you're scared to show them in fear of rejection....
This post is for you.
Let me just share a small story with you as it applies to my gift of creativity. I grew up always loving art, dance, photography...all things creative. Honestly, they were really the only things I excelled in because if you read my last post you know I basically don't have a left side of the brain hahahaha! I was placed in Senior art as a Freshman in High School...looking back - I was really good. I mean to skip 3 years of art and be placed in a class with students who had 4 extra years of experience was a huge thing. - I just didn't know that then. I thought I sucked, I couldn't take a compliment, and I was intimidated by the art being created around me, I was always comparing....
"Comparison.....the thief of all joy." - Theodore Roosevelt
That was the last year I took art...my confidence hadn't bloomed yet and I missed several years and opportunities to showcase my talent. How sad, looking back!
God gave us different gifts for a reason. Even when we try to push them aside, they will stay on your heart until you acknowledge that the passion never left you.
It wasn't until 2017 that I felt this overwhelming NEED to create again. I pulled out a sketch book and just started to draw. I remember Brian being shocked that I had this "hidden" talent. He was so sweet and encouraged me to pursue it more. He let me turn a corner in our tiny apartment into a studio space and bought me a giant easel. It was the easel that changed it all....I picked up a paint brush and that was it! Passion exploded and I dove back into creating. I remember Brian said to me "Babe, I want to see you do something with this." That's all I needed to hear. Encouragement. Someone to believe in me.
2 years later I was contacted by Conception Art to join their art show. I could have let fear hold me back but I decided to go for it. It was so fun, such an experience to remember.
I have the best people in my life who all showed up to support me! I stepped out of my comfort zone and shared my gift. Thats really the night my confidence bloomed and the start of something much bigger.
The second step is to believe in yourself!! God chose you for this gift and He does NOT make mistakes! When you submit to your gifts God will provide the rest.
I met my friend and Dallas artist Christina Yielding at that first show. I was like wow...whatever she is doing, I want to do. She was painting live and was just exuding confidence. We didn't start to build a friendship until a year later but she often reminds me "confidence is free."
Along with my amazing family, she has become a big part of my support team and I encourage you to keep those who inspire, and speak life into you close. When you believe in yourself and cram yourself with confidence watch how those doors start opening!! It's so cool!
The third step to success is using your gifts for good! Use them to make a difference, to leave an imprint of love on all you do. If your gift is speaking - speak life. If its dance - let your movements spark joy in the hearts of those watching. If its writing - write to inspire. If its being a parent - fill your child with love and encouragement. If its photography - capture moments that will be looked back on with smiles for years to come. Whatever it is, make it priority to use it to to serve other, bring joy, and reflect love.
Finally, I leave you with this... there is no better time to start working towards your dreams than now. I believe in you. You are unique, special, wonderfully made, and entrusted to use YOUR gifts to make the world a more beautiful place. Our pastor Chris Lindberg often reminds us that our life is like a vapor. Here today and gone tomorrow.
So if not now, when?
